Peculiar Mess

Peculiar Mess

10.10.2025 by Jyri Väisänen

Stories from the Collections

What do the Spring sculpture, the mysterious night of June 18, 1988, and commercial counselor Oskar Huttunen have in common? And what happens when collection bloat strikes? KUMMA’s new collection exhibition, Peculiar Mess, doesn’t just serve up works of art – it invites you to spoon up stories that are as strange and surprising as the museum’s collections themselves.

The Peculiar World of Collections

The exhibition delves deep into the secrets of art collecting: why do people want to own, preserve, and organize? How is a collection created, and what happens when collecting goes a little… over the top? It also explores the twists and turns of the art market, the wild world of forgeries, and dilemmas that make you question everything – even your own eyes.

And then there are the treasures. Those that have never been seen in an exhibition before, because no one dares to put such treasures on display. Yes, now they are on display. Come and see what can be found in a museum’s storerooms.

Peculiar Mess is the total art experience, but at the same time it is also an adventure. In the exhibition, you can take a look inside the trunk of an art dealer, from which a city father once bought works on tail light guarantee. Step into a plaster cabinet where the tooth of time has already taken its nibble. Crumbling works and dusty forms whisper of what once was – and what is no longer. You can also have a say the works you see: in the media art space, you choose what you want to watch. And yes, there is butter in the exhibition. Why? How it relates to the collections will become clear in the exhibition.
