In the 1980’s, art in North Savo was in upheaval: a fierce movement emerged, characterized by the ruthless use of color and the powerful expression of artists’ inner worlds. Key local influencers of Kuopio’s neo-expressionism included visual artists Pauno Pohjolainen, Markku Kolehmainen, Teemu Saukkonen, and Pentti Meklin. The exhibition approaches the 1980’s art phenomenon from the perspective of the so-called Kuopio School, while also considering other contemporary artists.
