Welcome to experience the magical nature of art at the KUMMA’s Magical exhibition! Magical is KUMMA’s interpretation of magical realism, where wonder and marvel, the play of proportions, fairy tales, and mysticism meet reality.
Magical dives into wondrous and mythical worlds. The exhibition takes you on an adventure in surprising spaces where parallel realities meet. The exhibition features different realities, sometimes scary (spooky!) and sometimes fairytale-like. But is there more behind the pieces?
Artists Tiina Heiska, Alma Jantunen, Timo Kokko, Ilai Elias Lehto, Ulla-Mari Lindström, Anne Meskanen-Barman, Adnan Mirza, Sirpa Hannele Heinonen, Tytti Putkonen, Joel Slotte, Anna Tahkola and working group Pete Revonkorpi & Henri Lindström have been invited to join Magical. The works of the invited artists are complemented by KUMMA’s collection artists kokoelmataiteilijat Minna Markkanen, Emma Ainala, Kaisaleena Halinen, Anu Halmesmaa, Hanna-Leena Heiska, Päivi Takala and Tommi Toija.

From Fairytale Landscapes to the Depths of the Forest
The exhibition’s landscapes change from fairytale-like atmospheres to dark worlds emerging from the depths of the forest. Be prepared for surprises as you navigate the labyrinthine exhibition space. As you progress through the exhibition, the angle of your view and the atmosphere changes. Like Alice’s Wonderland, the exhibition also plays with size. Tiina Heiska’s Alice whisks the viewer into different worlds, the first of which is bright and blooming.
Magical realism emerged in visual arts in the early decades of the 20th century. In this style, extreme realism was combined with elements of cubism and the exploration of the mind’s reality, similar to what is found in metaphysical art. Since the 1960s, magical realism has been associated with literature, particularly Latin American writers who combined magical elements with realistic storytelling. Recently, magical realism has also gained a foothold in Finnish literature..
KUMMA’s Magical is closer to literature where parallel realities meet and imagination takes over. We invited artists who recognized a spark of magic within themselves and also delved into our collections for artists and works that speak the same language. Nature serves as the connecting thread for the artists.
